On the evening of 12 February, 2024, Professor Christine Brown Wilson, Director of Internationalisation, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast, gave her inaugural professorial lecture in the Council Chamber, Lanyon building, QUB. The title of her lecture was: ‘Journey to the future - an international perspective of nursing and midwifery education.’
We live in an increasingly complex and changing world that impacts the landscape of academic and healthcare institutions - the nexus at which nursing and midwifery education is located. To ensure safe and effective healthcare of society, we need dynamic curricula that prepares the professionals of tomorrow. Coproduction is an inclusive method of curriculum development by engaging all stakeholders: students, service users/carers, practice partners, commissioners and academics. The key tenet of coproduction being shared decision making by valuing all perspectives.
Christine recounted the lessons learned through her academic and practice journey that supported her in embedding a model of coproduction and codesign at programme, module and now the global level. This model maintains the involvement of stakeholders in ongoing curriculum development and is now embedded in the culture of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at QUB.
Christine was joined at the lecture by her family, friends and colleagues who have supported her through this journey. The lecture showcased Christine’s experience of using coproduction, codesign and consensus methods across three continents to maintain a dynamic curriculum for health professions. The codesign process used in the School is now adapted for working with global partners and Christine looks forward to forging new global partnerships though this work.
